The 1st South Asian music awards had plenty of surprises and leading the way with 6 stunning nominations was Ashanthi, the hip-hop& r&b queen of Sri Lanka, followed by Shadow the electronica wizards from India equalling the nominations for genre-bending artist Sanjeev Thomas . Trailing by just one nomination were heavyweights in the rock category, Qayaas, who landed themselves 4 nominations, including a double nomination in the Best Rock Song category. Also with 4 nominations were Agam and Sifar.

“It was a real mixbag of styles this time round, with dance and electronica really being part of many of the submitted songs, including the rock category. We’re happy to see representation from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka this year, and Ashanthi has really notched up so many nominations because she is such a versatile act that defies genre similar to Sanjeev Thomas. Its great to see a past winner of ours, Shadow gain so many nominations too, but we also want to salute new faces such as Colin Terence and Pragya Wakhlu who have also done well in the nominations category. Its also amazing to see Pakistan’s top act, Qayaas have two nominations in the same category, but nothing is certain at this point as we head into the voting stage on November 15th. Official voting will be divided into 2 areas – 70% from global judges and music industry experts and 30% from online polls. Online voting will be open on www.bitemymusic.com on November 15th,2011.
